In Memoriam: Manuel Michel Sr., A Resilient Soul and Devoted Patriarch

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Manuel Michel Sr. (85), of Adrian, Oregon, on Saturday, January 13, 2024.  Manuel was a beloved son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, neighbor, and friend who lived a life marked by perseverance, resilience, dedication, and a deep commitment to family. Born on March 10, 1938, in Inde, Durango, Mexico, Manuel's journey began with humble roots and transformed into a legacy that will be remembered for generations.

In 1955, Manuel bravely embarked on a new chapter in his life when he joined the United States Bracero Program.  He tirelessly toiled as a farm worker in Texas, California, and Illinois for several years, before being contracted as a sheepherder in Idaho and Utah.  Manuel's strong work ethic and determined spirit were soon recognized as he transitioned from sheepherding to supporting ranchers and farmers engaged in clearing rangeland for farming in Raft River, Idaho.  For twenty-two years, he devoted his skills to farming and ranching with the J.R. Simplot Company, becoming an integral part of the local community and laying the groundwork for his American dream.

In 1990, Manuel achieved a milestone that spoke volumes about his many years of determination and perseverance— he invested his life savings to acquire his own farm in Adrian, Oregon.  This marked not only a personal triumph but also a testament to his unwavering devotion to providing more opportunity and a better life for his family.  Manuel's hands, weathered by years of labor, didn't just cultivate crops; they nurtured a legacy of hard work, discipline, love, and a deep appreciation for education.

Manuel Michel Sr. was a family man in every sense of the word. His strength and resilience were not just evident in his daily farm work, but also in the strong bonds he forged with his immediate and extended family, neighbors, friends, and fellow immigrants whom he generously assisted and uplifted throughout the journey of his life.

Manuel is survived by his devoted wife of 48 years, Eladia, and their children: Manuel (Claudia), Layla Melida (Silvestre), Nayla Neomy (Cesar), Cindy Guadalupe (Benito), and Jorge Luis. His enduring legacy also reaches beyond through his nine beloved grandchildren: Gregorio Alejandro, Benito Jr., Silvestre Jr., Alonso, Juan Manuel, Anelis, Sofia, Eloy, and Aliyah, who will perpetuate the values instilled by their grandfather.  He is also survived by his sisters Concepcion and Alicia, and his brother Cruz.  Additionally, Manuel is remembered by numerous nephews, nieces, and godchildren in the United States and Mexico.

Manuel is preceded in death by his oldest son, Marcos Antonio Olguin, by his parents Cruz and Antonia, sister Guadalupe, and brother Gabriel.

Though Manuel Michel Sr. has departed from this world, his spirit persists in the gentle rustle of the wind, in the fields he cultivated, and in the comforting warmth of the sun that brought him peace and joy during his cherished moments outdoors. Above all, his memory lives on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. May he rest in eternal peace.

The Michel family invites family, neighbors, and friends to join them in celebrating Manuel's life. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America.  Manuel was fortunate to have a family that offered him care and support throughout his prolonged illness; however, there are many individuals who do not share the same blessings.

Funeral Service: Friday, January 19 at 11:00 am at Our Lady of the Valley, 1122 W. Linden St. in Caldwell, Idaho, followed by procession to the Owyhee Cemetery.

Graveside: Friday, January 19 at 12:30 pm at the Owyhee Cemetery, 848 Owyhee Ave., in Owyhee Junction, Oregon.

In Memoriam: Manuel Michel Sr., un alma resiliente y patriarca devoto

Con gran pesar anunciamos el fallecimiento de Manuel Michel Sr. (85), de Adrian, Oregón, el día sábado 13 de enero de 2024.  Manuel fue un estimado hijo, hermano, esposo, padre, abuelo, vecino y amigo, quien vivió una vida marcada por la perseverancia, la resiliencia, la dedicación y un compromiso fuerte con la familia.  Nacido el 10 de marzo de 1938 en el municipio de Inde, Durango, México. La vida de Manuel comenzó con raíces humildes y se transformó en un legado que será recordado por generaciones.

En 1955, Manuel embarcó valientemente en un nuevo capítulo de su vida cuando se entro al Programa Bracero de los Estados Unidos. Trabajó en la agricultura en los estados de Texas, California e Illinois durante varios años, antes de ser contratado como pastor de ovejas en Idaho y Utah.  Su ética de trabajo y animo pronto fueron reconocidos cuando pasó de ser pastor de ovejas a apoyar a ganaderos y agricultores dedicados a limpiar monte para cultivar en Raft River, Idaho. Durante veintidós años, dedicó sus habilidades a la agricultura y la ganadería en J.R. Simplot Company, convirtiéndose en una parte integral de la comunidad local y sentando las bases para su sueño americano.

Manuel Michel Sr. fue un hombre de familia en todos los sentidos de la palabra. Su resiliencia y compromiso no solo fueron evidentes en su el trabajo diario de la agricultura, sino también en los fuertes vínculos que forjó con su familia inmediata y extendida, vecinos, amigos y compañeros inmigrantes a quienes ayudó y animó generosamente a lo largo del viaje de su vida.

A Manuel le precedieron en esta vida su hijo mayor, Marcos Antonio Olguín, sus padres Cruz y Antonia, su hermana Guadalupe y su hermano Gabriel.

Aunque Manuel Michel Sr. ha partido de este mundo, su espíritu persiste en el susurro del viento, en los campos que cultivaba y en el reconfortante calor del sol que le traía paz y alegría. Sobre todo, su memoria sigue viva en el corazón de quienes lo conocieron y amaron. Que su alma descanse en paz eterna.

La familia Michel invita a familiares, vecinos y amigos a unirse a ellos para celebrar la vida de Manuel.  En lugar de flores, la familia solicita que se hagan donaciones a la Alzheimer's Foundation of America.  Manuel tuvo la suerte de contar con una familia que le brindó atención y apoyo durante su prolongada enfermedad; sin embargo, hay muchas personas que no comparten las mismas bendiciones.
