Obituary of Rocky Johnston Curtis

After a courageous 4-year battle with cancer, Rocky Johnston Curtis passed peacefully at his home in Homedale, Monday, January 30 surrounded by the loving presence of his family. He was sixty-four. Born on March 7, 1958, to parents Alfred and Anna Mary (Johnston) Curtis, Rocky was the youngest of four siblings. He attended Homedale schools and graduated from Homedale High School in 1976. He joined the Air Force in 1977 and served as an Airman First Class for 2 years.

After leaving the military, Rocky started his own aluminum siding and window business. He moved to Vacaville, CA in 1988 where he obtained a contractor’s license and founded Curtis Brother’s Construction company.

Rocky married Janel Tooke of Vacaville, CA on July 23, 1994. They were married for 18 years but later divorced. They remained life-long friends and shared grandchildren, whom he cherished.

Rocky’s strong faith in Jesus carried him through the challenges of life. He loved serving the community in any way he could. He felt that being of service to others was his purpose in life. He was active in church, various community organizations and served as a sponsor for many individuals in AA. He worked with the youth group at his church and put his construction skills to use building houses in Mexico for a service trip in 2003. Rocky was a frequent speaker at middle schools, educating the students about addiction and recovery. One of Rocky’s most significant milestones was celebrating his 30 years of sobriety on January 4, 2023.

Rocky was an avid golfer and loved to fish. Rocky made life-long friends wherever he lived due to his outgoing personality and sense of humor. He will be remembered for his warm smile and unique laughter. Rocky was a naturally gifted singer. He performed the National Anthem at the Homedale Rodeo, was a member of the worship team at Covenant Community Presbyterian Church and sang at many weddings and funerals, including his mother’s funeral, his own wedding and his niece’s wedding in Ireland.

Rocky is survived by his 4 siblings: Kelly (Scipia) Curtis, Marilyn (Gary) Evans, Craig (Sandy) Curtis and Kent (Lori) Curtis; his ex-wife Janel Tooke and her children Jema (Matt) Hagerman and Sam Tooke; his grandkids Andrew, Julia, and Evan Hagerman; as well as his nieces and nephew and numerous cousins.

A special thanks to the VA in Sacramento and Boise, as well as, Hospice nurse Kenneth Leake for their concern and attentive care.

On March 10, 2023, starting at 11:00 a.m., a memorial service will be held at the Mountain View Church of the Nazarene, 26515 Ustick Road, Wilder. Following the service, all are welcome to attend a dinner at the Homedale Basque Center, 333 S Main St. There will be a private family inurnment ceremony on a different day.
