Larry C Choate Jr posted a condolence

It was with profound sadness and grief that I received the news of Larry’s passing. I am equally troubled that I am unable to be present at his memorial service.
Don, Alfreda and family, please accept my sincere condolences for this great loss for your family.
I first met Larry while visiting GFA during my eighth-grade year. We would be moving to Greenleaf for the following school year and were anxious to check out the school to get a lay of the land as it were. Larry was the first student I encountered there. He approached me with that big smile of his and announced, “do you remember me?”. I responded in the negative and he replied, “you beat me up once”. Slightly startled, I asked him when and where did this occur. He said that it happened a few years prior at youth camp at twin rocks Oregon. I told him that I was sorry, but I could not recall this action. I asked him what the reason for the alleged beat was down and he replied that he had mouthed off about something and it set my brother and I off, so we chased him down the beach and I beat him up
That event was an inauspicious beginning to what was to become an endearing friendship. It’s no stretch at all for me to say Larry was like a brother. During my four years in Idaho, except for my family and Bruce Johnson, Larry was the one I spent more of my free time with. I always considered Bruce my best friend in Idaho, but Larry was a close second. I’m sure Lonny would say that Larry was his best friend during those years. We spent a great deal of time together hunting birds and chasing girls and generally seeing how far we could bend the rules.
Through happenstance, dumb luck or our own ingenuity, Larry and I had the good fortune to have a free period at the same time my senior year. We conspired to spend that time contemplating the great issues of the day while meditating in the boy’s room. During one such session the topic of explosives was broached, and we considered the number of M-80’s that would be required to blow up a certain receptacle on the outskirts of town. Larry surmised that he understood that four such devises were equivalent to a stick of dynamite and that two then should be sufficient to do the job right. I considered his input but concluded that if two would do the job that surely three would send a more convincing message.
On the agreed upon mission date Larry had the good sense to be otherwise engaged, I decided to go ahead with the plan and was pleased that Don Jennings was quite exuberant to provide himself as getaway driver with his grandmother’s old ford rambler as the vehicle. I’m certain that that car could not have achieved any legal speed limit even free falling over a cliff. Nevertheless, off we went to the mission. Don had the car positioned halfway down the street and as soon as I lit the bundled fuses, I raced down the street to get collected by Don. On my way to him I turned in time to see an impressive mushroom cloud and pieces of the receptacle flying high in all directions, the post it was mounted on had also split in two as if struck by a lightning bolt. By that time, I had reached Don and as I passed him I looked and noticed that his body was in a straight line and he appeared to be pushing the accelerator through the floorboard and pulling back so hard on the steering wheel that I was sure it was going to pop off the column and send him into the back seat. He finally caught up with me at the end of the street and I dove through the window to complete the escape. The next day was Monday and at our porcelain throne session that day Larry asked me how it went, all I said was that he was correct, two would have been sufficient.
I have nothing but fond memories of Larry as varied as standing with me at my wedding, to riding shotgun as I put the 442 in a ditch at high speed and everything in between. Larry and I had many adventures and a great number of them were completely legal!
Through the years I have visited Idaho at least once a year and Yvette and I always go to dinner with Bruce and Debbie and we never left there without trying to hook up with Larry. We had success at times but not often enough for either of us. Life has a way of getting in the way of such encounters and I’m sad to say that we failed to see him the last time we were in town, both of us felt strongly that we needed to see how he was and how life was treating him, we will always lament our failure there but have many happy times to salve the wound created by this huge loss to us. I loved Larry and, in many ways, I appreciated his toughness and ability to live life on his own terms, he marched to his own drum and was not swayed by outside pressure to be conventional. Vaya con Dios my brother you are greatly missed.
Your brother, Larry Choate Jr.

Larry was a year ahead of me in high school. He was a great multi-sport athlete, and the honors he won proved it. I never told anyone until now, but I looked up to him, and I couldn't even come close to his athletic prowess. On top of that, he sang great solos in the Greenleaf choir. He could do anything. God gave him many gifts. Must have been fun fishing with him in the later years. My condolences to his family. Davis Gates GFA Class of '81
