Much More than a Good Neighbor.
Few people in my life have had the type of lasting influence Alex Silva has had on mine. My earliest memories of Mr. Silva are from a young age. He had a habit of making sure that I always spoke with proper grammar. Something I didn’t fully learn to appreciate until later in life. As some time passed Alex became much more than a mentor of proper speech. Alex dedicated considerable time with me as a personal running coach and tutored me in advanced high school math, science and Spanish courses. His personal training sessions whether they involved interval work on a track or hill repeats on Chicken Dinner Road were always the most challenging and beneficial workouts I experienced as a high school runner. When I knew him, Mr Silva may have retired as a teacher at Marsing High School, but he never checked out of learning and mentoring the rising generation.
A few of his coaching words of advice have stayed with me to this day. “If something doesn’t hurt somewhere, your not training hard enough” has always been one of my favorite that has been passed along more than a few times. Another was “you are only as old as you feel”. The older I get the more this one rings true, some days more than others.
Alex came to many of my track and cross county races through the years and always provided sage coaching advice before and after many. The Silva’s also entrusted me with regular jobs taking care of their house while they were away and the occasional painting gig. I will forever be grateful for his mentoring life lessons. My only regret is that I didn’t stay better in touch in recent years. I can only hope to someday be so much more than just a good neighbor as Alex was to me.
My deepest sympathies to all those he was dear to and my deepest gratitude for sharing him in life.
Sincerely,
Brandon Scott Hill

I am a first-generation college graduate and that is thanks in part to Mr. Silva. He was a wonderful, engaging math and physics teacher. I was afraid of what college would be like, doubting that I had what it took to do well there. But he had no doubt - I believe he asked me about it every day of my final year of high school, and he pushed me (in his own humorous, kind way) to go. Because he believed in me, I believed in me. Thank you, Mr. Silva.

Alex Silva was an incredible man. He was like a second father to me in high school, invested fully in my success in track, getting me excited about running road races as often as possible. He even sat with me EVERY day and helped me with Algebra. I am a better, stronger person because of him. God bless him and his family. Thank you JoAn for accepting all of us after road races; you are an amazing lady. I will never forget either of you. Ilene and Tom, I am grateful your family was a part of my life. You are special.

Mr. Silva inspired me to pursue the nuclear power program in the Navy. He was my favorite teacher, always challenging me to learn more. He set the example in his life each and every day. I will always remember him running the canal bank from the old high school out past Edison Rd. Thank you for everything you did for me and all the rest of your students. Rest In Peace.
