Obituary of David Dean Reed

David Dean Reed 89 of Caldwell, ID, died June 21, 2018 in Caldwell, Idaho. Funeral services will be held on Sat. July 7, 2018 at 10:00 AM at the LDS Stake Center, 3015 S. Kimball Ave, Caldwell, ID. Interment will follow at the Canyon Hill Cemetery, Caldwell with military honors. His viewing will be from 9:00-10:00 AM in the Relief Society Room at the church. Services are under the care of Flahiff Funeral Chapel Caldwell, ID. 

David was born May 16, 1929 on the family farm at Rose Hill, Kansas to Robert Edward Reed and Edith Viola Warren, the third of six children. At age 14 he moved with his family to Nampa where he graduated from Nampa Senior High. After a year to earn some money, David enrolled at the College of Idaho where he was a Student Body President 1950-51, graduating in 1952 with a B.A. in chemistry.

David married his high school sweet heart, Sharron Joy Ord, December 23, 1951 and was blessed with two sons: Michael David (Cheryl Kay Berryman) and Donald Arthur (Kathleen Muhlestein), both still living.

From October 1952 to September 1954, David served as an electronics SPC in US Army, 9 Ordinances Battalion which was responsible for nuclear warheads used in missiles, bombs and artillery shells. After his Army service, David attended the University of Oregon graduate school where he received a M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in organic chemistry leaving Oregon in January 1958 to work as a research chemist to Texaco at the Glenham, New York laboratory. While at the Glenham laboratory, David developed lubricating oils for gasoline, diesel and aircraft turbine engines resulting in more than thirty U.S. Patents for various chemical additives. In February 1975 he, together with Sharon and Son Donald, were transferred to Tokyo, Japan as Vice-president, Texaco Japan and Senior V.P. Mitsui Texaco Chemical Co. a joint venture with Mitsui Petrochemical, David had unique experience in being the only non-Japanese in the company. While in Japan David travelled extensively through Asia representing Texaco Petrochemical Co. after Six years in Japan, David and his family transferred to Texaco Petrochemical Co. headquarters in Houston, Texas retiring in December 1987. David and Sharron moved to Caldwell in December 1990 and for the past 18 years have spent winters in Arizona near their Family.

After his baptism in 1962, David was very active in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints serving as bishop in New York, Branch President and 1st Counselor in the District Presidency in Japan, in the Bishopric and Patriarch in Huston and on the High Council in New York, Japan, and Caldwell. David and Sharon served for 10 years as ordinances workers in the Boise Idaho Temple.

David and Sharon have enjoyed traveling around the world through the years with special friends and seen most of Europe and Asia. The Oregon Coast was his favorite.

He is survived by Sharon, his dear wife of 66 years, two sons: Michael David Reed and Donald Arthur Reed Both of Arizona, a brother Donald James Reed of Portland, Oregon seven grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.
